Recover unsaved WPS files with Auto Backup

WPS keeps local backups if Auto Backup was on. Cloud files have a Recycle Bin. If both fail, the Windows Roaming folder is the last dignified try before a disk-recovery tool.

Student with a laptop - the typical recovery reader

Kingsoft’s help article “How to recover files deleted by mistake and unsaved files, and view backup files” is the primary source for the clicks below.

1. The restart prompt

After a crash or power loss, open the same module (Writer, Spreadsheet, or Presentation). If a View Backup banner appears, use it. Save the recovered file under a new name immediately.

2. Auto Backup panel

  1. Open a blank document in the same app.
  2. Menu → Backup and Recovery → Auto Backup.
  3. Switch Local Backup vs Cloud Backup to match how you work.
  4. View Details, sort by time, Open or Open All.
  5. File → Save As. Do not save over a damaged original until you have two copies.

3. Cloud Recycle Bin

If you deleted a cloud document: WPS Home → Open → Recycle Bin → Recover. Then find it again under My Cloud Files.

4. Windows folder (last resort)

On many Windows installs, backups live under a Kingsoft path similar to C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\kingsoft\office6\backup. Show hidden items in Explorer. Sort by Date modified. This path can change by version - if it is empty, believe the in-app Auto Backup list first.

Turn it on before the next outage

  • Enable Auto Backup and pick a short interval.
  • Save important files to disk and to Cloud.
  • Do not treat Cloud as immortal - Kingsoft warns idle accounts can lose cloud objects after long inactivity.

Prevention that takes two minutes

  • Enable Auto Backup the first evening.
  • Save important files to disk and to Cloud.
  • Do not treat Cloud as immortal - idle accounts can lose objects after a long stretch without login.
  • Name versions: proposal-v3.docx is cheaper than a recovery tool.

If a pop-up offers “AI recover everything” while you are already panicking, close it. That is a different product category and a common malware door.

Recover unsaved WPS document: the order that wastes less time

Restart and use View Backup if it appears. Then Menu → Backup and Recovery → Auto Backup. Then Cloud Recycle Bin for deleted cloud files. Then the Roaming folder on Windows. Save recovered work under a new name. Kingsoft’s help article is the primary source for those clicks.

Prevention is cheaper than recovery

Set a short Auto Backup interval the first night. Save to disk and, if you use Cloud, wait for the sync icon. A hostel outage or a kernel update should not be the first time you learn the menu path.
